Holi “the festival of colours” is one of the major festival celebrated all over India. The holi festival celebrates on last full moon day of Falgun in the month of march every year. There are many interesting stories associated with this festival in different states. Some of them says the origin of holi is relates to ‘Holika Dahan’ and the another one is Legend of Radha-Krishan. Holi in Maharashtra : In Maharashtra Holi festival was celebrate as Rangpanchami or Shimga. People in Maharashtra celebrate this festival with their own style like North Indian’s. The state also gets its unique Holi flavour with the delicacies such as Puran Poli and along with this people take sugarcane juice and watermelon juice on celebrating this Holi. People in Maharashtra enjoyed this great festival by singing and dancings. The main attraction of this festival is pot breaking sport which is the ancient Era of lord krishna.

Holi in Bengal : In west Bengal Holi is celebrated as ‘Basant Utsav’ known as ‘Dol Jatra’, ‘Dol Purnima’ or Spring festival. Panache is added by the presence of the rich Bengal culture and the existence of Shantiniketan which was started by the grat poet and Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore. Basant Utsav has become a cherished part of Bengali history and culture, and it attracts numerous foreign tourists. People in this region celebrate this festival not only with colors but also with songs and dances.

Holi in Barsana : Barsana a village 42 kms away from Mathura is the the birthplace of Radha. People in Barsana called this Holi festival as ‘Lathmaar Holi’ and celebrate this festival in a different way when compared to others. Men from Nandgaon which is the own land of Krishna come to play Holi with the girls of Barsana and hope of raising their flag over Shri Radhikaji’s temple. But, instead of colours they are greeted with sticks by the gopis. The Lathmaar Holi festival takes place around a week before the main day of Holi. The celebrations continue in various Krishna temples by filling with colours and fun.

Holi in Mathura- Vrindavan : People in Mathura and Vrindavan celebrate this Holi festival over a week and celebrate this as Vasant Panchami, 40 days before the main Holi day. Mathura is the birth place of lord krishna and the people relive that the festival of colours, Holi is associated with Radha and Krishna and play pranks the young Krishna played with the cowgirls called gopis. Mathura is the only destination which witnesses vibrancy of culture & colours during Holi Period. Another Holi celebrated place is Gulal Kund in Braj which is a beautiful little lake near Govardhan mountain. Here, the festival is commemorated on a more regular basis. Pilgrims can see the re-enactments of Holi throughout the year at this lake.

Holi in Punjab : In Punjab another name for Holi is ‘Hola Mohalla’. This is celebrated as day after Holi in Punjab especially by the Nihang Sikhs. This festival was held at the headquarters of Anandpur Sahib began as a counterpart to Holi. Though it almost did away with the throwing of colors, nonetheless, it is more colorful.Martial arts like archery, sword fencing, fancy horse-riding, tent-pegging, and the deft handling of other contraptions of offence and defense are displayed by the Nihangs.
