The place was named after Dandelappa, a resident deity. According to folklore, It is believed by people there that Dandelappa was a servant of the Mirashi lords and had to sacrifice his life due to his loyalty. There is also another legend that saying that the place gets its name after Dandaka Nayaka a king who while passing through the forests he himself named them after him. A considerable population of Dandeli consists of North Indian diaspora.
